TKAM - Character Relationships 12/4/14

Prompt: Character Relationships
Pages Read: 0-194

Aunt Alexandra and Atticus have a very unusual relationship. It seems like Alexandra comes and starts to change the way Atticus runs things. When Aunt Alexandra came, Atticus has been acting very weird with the children, he is kind of following everything she says and believes. Atticus and Alexandra both have a kind of authority with the children and this allows both of them to have differences when it's time to make decisions. She is Atticus's sister, and of course, he is going to respect her ideas even though some of them are crazy. Atticus and Alexandra are foils to Scout because they don't have the same types of thoughts. They don't understand Scout, and that is starting to effect her.

Alexandra believes that Atticus should not defend the Tom Robinson because she is racist toward them. Atticus believes that he should defend him even if he knows he's gonna lose. She calls him a "nigger-lover" just because he was defending Tom, and of course Atticus didn't agree with what she said.  He knows it's not true, so he didn't let it get to him. Scout is being affected by this because she is curious, and she knows the "nigger-lover" means something bad, and that's why she always is asking. She cares about her father, and I don't think she is very fond of that name he is being called by his sister.

Scout seems to be affected a lot by her father and Aunt Alexandra because their decisions about her are going to change some things. Atticus is following what Alexandra says, just like when they said that Scout needs a feminine influence in her life. Now that she is getting older, things are starting to connect and her father is going to notice that. If Scout wants to be a tom boy, then she can. Her guidance is going to be her family, but she shouldn't have to be told how to act. That's what Aunt Alexandra is doing right now. Atticus and Scout have an interesting relationship and it is not easy for them to get used to the new guidance rules.

  1. Aunt Alexandra doesn't actually call Atticus that name to his face. How do we know she feels this way though? How else does Atticus affect Scout?
