Prompt: Are the characters realistic? Why or why not?
Pages Read: 0-63
So far this book is really interesting. It isn't like other books that I've read but it really is unique. The main character, Esperanza, seems very realistic because she is like a typical teenager. Her family has been moving from place to place, and they finally live on Mango Street. They have always dreamed about having a huge white house, but in reality they lived in an apartment with 1 bathroom and bedroom. Her family hasn't really found that one home that they really liked. They have a pretty bug family so they need to find that perfect house for them.
There is a girl named Sally and she moved to Mango Street the same year as Esperanza did. Sally isn't like a lot of Esperanza's friends. She is always running off with boys and abandoning Esperanza. She has an abusive father and Esperanza is very protective over her. She seems really realistic because what happens to her, happens to a lot of girls her age. It is really unfortunate for her because she really has no where else to go. Another character is Esperanza's mother, Mama. She is a very strong woman and she is someone she looks up to. She was born in the U.S. and she knows a lot about what she's talking about. She seems kind of realistic because she is like a perfect mom, but most moms are different.
So far I am enjoying the book because of the characters and how they interact with each other. They seem to get along, but the conflicts between them seem very real and they can possibly happen. This book teaches you a lot about people and how you can learn from them. So far, my favorite character is Esperanza because she sometimes reminds me of myself. SHe does a lot of things that I do too.
