The Secret Life of Bees is a really interesting book. When you hear the name, you think about bees and how they live their lives. This book is not about bees. This book is about a girl named Lily and her step mother Rosaleen. Lily has a father named T.Ray and he isn't very nice to her or Rosaleen. So many times, T.Ray has made Lily put her knees in burning hot grits for at least an hour. So far, we are learning more about the characters and how they interact with each other. We are learning the settings and the attitudes of all of the characters. So far, my favorite character is Rosaleen because she doesn't care about what will happen to her, but she says anything on her mind and sometimes it gets her in trouble.
In the story, Rosaleen is in big trouble. She poured some black liquid on these guy's feet and they are thinking about keeping her in jail. All of those men (about 5 of them) want to beat up Rosaleen and make her say sorry. Lily was there the whole entire time and T.Ray is only letting her out of jail. He didn't want to bail out Rosaleen for some really weird reason. Right now in the book, Lily just stood up to T.Ray and told him that she isn't scared up him. Obviously, T.Ray doesn't like that he threatens to hit her. Then, Lily says "Go ahead, try and hit me!" That's where I stopped reading. I wanted to keep reading, but it was late and I needed to sleep.
I think that Lily will start to talk to T.Ray and try to get him to bail Rosaleen out of jail. I have a feeling that T.Ray won't do it, but maybe Lily will. Lily might want to run away and find Rosaleen because she doesn't like to live with T.Ray. Rosaleen has been the person who stands up for Lily and she doesn't let T.Ray touch her. Now that Lily will be alone with him, he has nothing stopping him from doing anything and everything.
I think it was going a little over the top when the five men decided to put her in jail for what she did. Did they end up beating up Rosealeen? T. Ray does sound like a horrible father to be for making Lily to that. Your predictions seem reasonable to me. Do you have any idea why this book might be called "The Secret Life of Bees"?
