The Giver Week of: 11/25/13

Prompt: After reading, I wonder...
Pages Read: 71-108

So far, I love it. At first I thought it was going to be very boring, but now I regret saying that. It makes me want to read forever. I don't want to read ahead because that ruins everything. Now that we know who The Giver is, it makes everything clearer. I get why he is called the Giver now. He gives the receivers his old memories, and the receiver receives them. Now I totally get the whole naming concept. I would love to keep on reading forever and ever. I want to read Son after this book because it is supposed to be the sequel for The Giver. I'm so excited to finish this book!

I chose this prompt because I wondered so much after reading chapter 12. First off, how did The Giver give Jonas the memory? I was really interested in this because if I tried giving all of my memories away like that, I don't think that it would work. Second, why did Jonas specifically get chosen to be the receiver? I know that being a receiver is a hard and confusing job, but how did he qualify for it? He was just a regular boy in a community, and he got chosen. Personally I wouldn't like to be a receiver because you would have to carry all of the good and bad memories of other people in your head. Third question, how does this all work? The whole thing, I am very confused about some parts of the book. What are the Stirrings? So many questions are in my mind right now, I want them to be answered!

I recommend this book to middle schoolers. I know that sounds weird, but I still get confused about what is happening sometimes. This book jumps from place to place and from problem to problem. Sometimes I like books like that, but if they aren't fun to read because they are confusing, not that much fun. This book is confusing, but I really like it. It's interesting, I can relate to some parts, and it has some cliff hangers that make me want to read more. I love this book, and I am excited to continue it!

  2. I agree with you because at first I also thought that this book was going to be boring. I found out that the Giver has three other sequels. The sequel after the Giver is a book called Gathering Blue. The third book in the series is Messenger and the last book in the series is Son. I like how you shared your opinions about this book and nice job using explicit details. Nice Job

  3. I thought that the book would be boring too, but it did turn out it be an awesome book. I think that being a receiver has to do with the color of your eyes. If you have the color maybe you can able to give memories away. I loved your post this week! It was very detailed. I also loved how you expressed you thoughts within the post.
