The Color Purple Week of: 10/21/13

Prompt: Summarize what you just read.
Pages: 0-10

This book is great! Even though I just started it, the book is so interesting. It's about a young girl and she is 14 years old.  This book is made of all of her diary entries she ever made. This her from her perspective, and she tells everything the way she sees it. She explains what people do to her, and how hard it is to be a colored person. Her family isn't rich, and she has other family member that need to be fed. She has had so many hard times already, she has been abused, she has to marry any man that is chosen for her, and she needs to deal with slavery. This story tells so much in a couple pages. The book is a great book for people who want to learn more about slavery and the life of a slave.

My prompt was, summarize what you just read. The first page starts with an interesting start. She is being abused by a grown man, and she explain exactly what he does and how it feels. This really sad to me, because she can't tell anybody about what he is doing to her. Then, the book starts explaining her family, aunts, and friend. They tell us that her family is being killed by other family members. Now. First off, this isn't right. Secondly I know from social studies that back then, there weren't many laws or rules back then. This surprises me a lot. She talks about a man name Mr._______. I'm not sure my she doesn't say his name, but I'm sure I will find out. So, these 10 first pages of the book are just an introduction to her family, problems, and the setting in which this is taking place in.

My sister told me that she has read this book and that it is really good. My friends have talked about the movie, and about how good it is. I feel that this book is a good read for older people and younger people. I know form personal experience that books like this are usually great books. There is something different about this book, though. I know that it's about slavery, but I think this book is trying to make the readers think. This book uses words that aren't spelled right, but they make sense. Which is weird, but this book is great so far!

  1. I had no idea there was a book to the movie "The Color Purple". I'll make sure I'll be reading this soon. From what you have summarized it is very similar to the movie about how she is being abused and is married to a guy that is chosen for her. I remember in the movie her telling all of her friends and family what is happening to her. Make sure to watch the movie after reading this book!

  3. That's cool. You made an awesome summary for ten pages. I also didn't know that there was a movie. I love books that are diary entry type ones. I'm going to try and read this book.

  4. Amelia,
Do you know if this book was written from or by someone who was colored? I've read alot on slavery but I think it would be interesting to hear from someone who has actually been through it themselves.

    1. Amelia,
Your blog this week was super interesting, and from what I've heard from only the first 10 pages of the story, I really want to read this book! You seem to be picking very interesting books lately! I think it's cool that this book is about slavery, and we are just finishing up learning about slavery in the South in social studies! Also, we are continuing to learn about slavery through immigration! I also find it very interesting how you said that you feel the Author is trying to make you think because they spell the words incorrectly, but they still make sense! I really want to read this book, and I really enjoyed your blog this week!
